]]> ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਨਾਵਲਕਾਰ, ਕਹਾਣੀਕਾਰ, ਨਾਟਕਕਾਰ, ਨਿਬੰਧਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਕ ਓਨੋਰੇ ਦ ਬਾਲਜ਼ਾਕ (1799-1850) ਦੇ ਬਹੁਪੱਖੀ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਰੰਗੀ ਜੀਵਨ ‘ਤੇ ਆਧਾਰਿਤ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਚਾਰਲਸ ਗੋਰਹਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਾਵਲ ‘ਵਾਈਨ ਆਫ਼ ਲਾਈਫ਼’ ਇਕ ਸ਼ਾਹਕਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਹੈ। ਚਾਰਲਸ ਗੋਰਹਾਮ ਨੇ ਬਾਲਜ਼ਾਕ ਦੀ ਪੰਘੂੜੇ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕਬਰ ਤਕ ਦੀ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਜੀਵਨ-ਯਾਤਰਾ ਦੀ ਦਿਲ-ਟੁੰਬਵੀਂ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਏਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣਿਕਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਬਿਆਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਬਾਲਜ਼ਾਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵੇ। ਬਾਲਜ਼ਾਕ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਵੀਹ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ 90 ਨਾਵਲ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ, ਜੋ ‘ਦ ਹਯੂਮਨ ਕਾਮੇਡੀ’ ਦੀਆਂ 16 ਜਿਲਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹਨ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਵਲਾਂ/ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ 2472 ਪਾਤਰ ਹਨ। ਵੰਨ-ਸੁਵੰਨੇ ਪਾਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਐਨੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਗੈਲਰੀ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਨੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਫ਼ਰਾਂਸ ਦੇ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ, ਰਾਜਨੀਤਕ, ਆਰਥਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਦਰਪਣ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨੀ ਮੂਲਕ ਨਾਵਲ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ‘ਜੀਵਨ ਮਦਿਰਾ’ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਹੇਠ ਸੁਹਿਰਦ ਪਾਠਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
