]]> Amritsar (literally : lake of nectar), founded by Guru Ram Das on 10th June, 1564, is one of the major Cities of the Sikhs. The major events of Sikh history are related with this City. Besides the world-fame Sri Darbar Sahib, there are several places of importance in Amritsar City. It includes 17 Gurdwaras, 220 dharamsalas (inns/hostels), 31 Samadhs (tombs, mausoleums), 70 thakardwaras (temples dedicated to different deities), 18 Shivalas (Shiv temples), 10 takiyas (monasteries of the Muslims), 6 mosques, 35 akharas (houses of the preachers of the Udasi sects), 3 major deras, 70 bungas (residential complexes), 70 katras (walled mohallas, bazars and markets).
